Howard Finster Vision House Chicago reopens! Thursday 10-13-2011

Art Lovers.

It's been several months since I sent out an email and I know many of you are looking forward to this update.
So here it is!

I rented out my storefront at 1346 N. Paulina St. to the Kangen Oasis Chicago.
I'm actually in on the new company and there has been an incredible rehab done on the space.
The Kangen Oasis Chicago is all about helping you drink the healthiest substance on the planet.
Kangen Water is ionized water and the platinum water machines we sell there make a 9.5ph water along with 6 other types of water.
Beauty water, clean water, strong acidic water and 8.5 and 9.0 ph water.
Why does anyone need 7 waters you ask?
Well I'd be happy to demonstrate and explain that to you at either the Kangen Oasis Chicago or at the new Howard Finster Vision House Chicago.

New Howard Finster Vision House Chicago I say?
That's right. I have opened another Howard Finster Vision House Chicago at my new location which is 2921 W. Fulton St. 1st floor!

Our first exhibit will be a group show from my collection.

I would now like to invite you to the next two showings at the new Howard Finster Vision House Chicago this Thursday night October 13 as well next Thursday October 20th from 5-9pm.
I have installed an excellent display of all of your favorite Howard Finster Vision House Chicago artists.
We have Howard Finster, Chris Peldo, Marc Hauser, Andy Kane, Rita Akao, Ronnie Cutrone, Chris Makos, Laura Collins, Bruce Lehto, Hunt Slonem, Tony Rubino, Tom Billings and Walter Fydryck.
I also have on display 75 pieces from my Private Collection that make for an awesome tour through my 20 years in the Art Business.
I will be serving free Kangen Water all evening and there will be a demonstration of the Platinum Kangen water machine at 7:00pm.

I am also very pleased to announce that the Howard Finster Vision House Chicago collection is now on tour in Long Grove, Illinois.
The Howard Finster Vision House Chicago and it's curator David Leonardis were advertised in a two full color page ad in the Art Institute of Chicago members magazine.
I will be hosting two more Power Point lectures on Howard Finster in Long Grove on Friday October 21st and Friday November 18th both starting at 7pm.
Check out this fantastic 222 piece exhibit and read the press release.

In other news the original Howard Finster Vision House in Summerville, Ga has been undergoing some incredible improvements!
Earlier in the Summer we finished the "Frosting Room".
This is the bed part of our soon to be opening bed and breakfast.
A room finished completely in bead board with an incredible view of Howard Finster's Paradise Gardens.
I was working on the Museum in Georgia for 7 weeks this Summer and did some very manly jungle work too.
Also major improvements have been done to our foundation walls.
Our new caretaker Robert Lebus has been doing a fantastic job and I encourage you to go down to the Howard Finster Vision House in Summerville, Ga and take a look for yourselves!

This month marks the 10 year aniversary of Howard Finster's death.
I remember showing up at his home on Oct 21st, 2001 and Mrs. Finster brought me into Howard's bedroom.
"Howard. Howard. David Leonardo is here to see you. Your friend David Leonardo", she said.
Well of course my name is David Leonardis but you don't exactly correct Mrs. Finster when her husband is lying there on his death bed.
Not to be melo dramatic or anything but Death was hovering above the Rev. Howard Finster.
I rubbed him on the shoulder and said hello.
"Well, I'm not feeling too good. But you go get yourself some food out of the ice box", he said.
That's the kind of man Howard Finster was. Giving until the very day he died.
I had some Coca Cola with Mrs. Finster in the kitchen and then later that night I received a call from his Grandson Allen Wilson telling me that Howard Finster had died.
I play it tough but I cried like a baby.
Howard was my friend and mentor so this was pretty shocking.

Ten years later having the Howard Finster Vision House in two cities and a touring exhibit is the least I can do for my old friend.

Life is precious and that's why I like to enjoy it by collecting art.
Art is valuable of course but it's reminder to enjoy life is it's most valuable quality in my opinion.

With all of that said I look forward to seeing some of you at the Howard Finster Vision House Chicago this Thursday and next.
As well I hope to see many of you at the Howard Finster Vision House touring exhibit in Long Grove.

In celebration of my Love of Art I will also be giving a free Howard Finster print with any purchase over
$500.

All the art here looks better in your house and I can help you out with that!

Thank you.

Chicago Art Dealer and Gallery Owner David Leonardis to Host New Television Show

Chicago, IL (March 29, 2010) - Successful Chicago artist, art dealer, gallery owner, columnist and now TV show host, David Leonardis will be premiering new TV show, Chit Chat with David Leonardis & Sarah Cooley, an eight episode, 16 week show that will air Tuesdays at 10:00 PM on Chicago's CANTV beginning April 13th, 2010.  Executive Producer Leonardis and co-host Sarah Cooley take the show to favorite Chicago locations including The Joynt where they reach out to prominent Chicagoans using provocative questions to gain insight and opinions.  Leonardis and Cooley probe for answers on select introspective questions regarding the sexual rights of a spouse, the National Health Care Initiative, and the Chicago Parking Contract.  Leonardis also asks, "Do you think Art Collectors are better, more well rounded people?  Why didn't Elin Woods go to jail?" and also the daring question, "Cubs or Sox? Hold your head up high!" Featured guests include Bill Zehme, Joe Piscopo, Candace Jordan, Cleo Wilson and Joan Esposito.  Leonardis also takes the inquiries on the red carpet at the theatrical premiere of WE BELIEVE, a feature length documentary film fully authorized by the Chicago Cubs, where he gets face time with Derek Lee and Miss Illinois.  Probably Leonardis' most dear episode are interviews with the family and friends of the late folk artist Reverend Howard Finster, filmed in the Howard Finster Vision House Museum.  Leonardis began his career as an admirer of Finster's work building a friendship with the bicycle repairman before purchasing and restoring his home in Summerville, GA, as a shrine and museum to honor and commemorate the renowned artist.  Celebrating it's 18 year anniversary, the David Leonardis Gallery is one of several successful projects Leonardis has embarked upon.  The art is meant to be affordable giving even the most modest collector an opportunity to build a collection.  "I want to raise people's awareness about the importance of culture in their lives," states Leonardis, "Art collectors are better, more well rounded people -- in my opinion.  I've always been about bridging a gap between people that create art and people who buy art.  Being able to promote art and culture on TV is another venue for me to creatively spread a message, share perspectives and promote artistic ideas."

The red carpet premiere of Chit Chat with David Leonardis & Sarah Cooley will be held at Stanley Wozniak's, The Joynt in downtown Chicago at 650 North Dearborn Street, on Tuesday, April 13th, 2010 at 6:00 PM.

Tim Kazurinsky

What a difference a day makes!

What a difference an evening makes. I had a fantastic time at Ragtime at the Drury Lane Theatre. A fabulous performance and the networking was pretty good too. I ran into my former banker. I liked to think of him as Balder the Brave from the Thor comic book. It's a long story. But let me just tell you that two of the most interesting words in the English Language are, Promissory Estople. A big shout out to a super cool guy Tim Kazurinsky!!! Hanging out with him tonight and having hung out with Joe Piscopo on my TV show took me back to 1982 and flash forward to 2010 things are similar but different. Much different but actually kinda similar. My red carpet premiere is going to be great. Please come by if you can everyone.

DLR 2010 #2

This column originally ran on www.diningchicago.com

Ah yes another David Leonardis Report.

What a fine privilege it is to put together a fun group of events and opinions and to get to share them with my adoring public.
Ok. Here it goes.

Let's start with Funny Girl at the Drury Lane Theater and see where that takes us.
After a fair amount of searching around for a date I finally went to see Funny Girl at Drury Lane for an afternoon performance.
The thing about Theater is it's a commitment to go to a 3 hour + performance. Especially if it's 30 minutes away from the city.
But here's the thing. For a cultural Bon Vivant such as myself it's a really easy commitment to make. I've seen the last 4 performances at Drury Lane and I realize there is a lot of science, business and psychology to putting on the performance. And I'm just talking about the planning and promotion. Please. Let me explain.

I saw Pump Boys and Dinettes over the summer. That was a really up beat performance. Lot's of music. Not too too sexy. A little sexy but not too too sexy.
I left feeling like I had been entertained and it was a very lighthearted feeling that I had. On with my day after that and I didn't think much more about it. Except that I was in a good mood.

I went to see Cabaret and I wasn't sure what to expect. I can picture seeing clips on TV of Liza Minelli in the Cabaret hat and stocking with a tight little costume. This is when Liza was still a cutie. Oh Liza. Did you see her in Arrested Development as the neighbor to one of the Bluth brothers? A dirty old lady looking for love in all the wrong places. Of course Liza’s biggest moment in the sun was when she got married and had Liz Taylor and Michael Jackson standing up for her. Now that was one of Hollywood’s greatest spectacles ever. Not too long after that I was living back and forth between New York City and Chicago when I went to see Liza perform with Sun Times Reporter Lewis Lazare. We were right up in front, I think I was inspired by Lewis to get better performance tickets by becoming a columnist. So a couple of seats over who is there but Liza’s husband David. Here’s a guy who has had a couple too many plastic surgeries in my opinion. At least that’s what it looked like to me. I hear he’s pretty litigious too. Good thing I have the David Leonardis Legal Team on board, just in case. Which just makes me want to say again how un cool I thought it was for Tony Peraica to bail on my TV show 30 minutes before he was scheduled to appear. However, I digress.

So anyway, Cabaret was a fantastic performance at Drury Lane. I mean the sets were great, the actors and actresses were all super talented and the chorus girls were total babes. So there I am having my senses appealed to and then all of a sudden the Nazi’s come in. I’m not talking about Chicago’s version. The LAZ Parking Ltd, LLC people. The Parking Nazi’s. The arrogant, evil, rude, out to try and get your money at all costs parking enforcers. I’m talking about the actual Nazi’s. Which since it was historical it was relative and then the songs and humor darkened in relation to the situation. By the time it was over I walked out of there feeling depressed. Let me be clear. I loved the show. I gave it a great review at the time but this was a dark play. They wanted you to be left thinking about it and the underlying messages they had in the script.

Now the third performance I saw was Thoroughly Modern Milly. This was a fun show with lots of dance numbers with hot hot ladies. The girl gets the guy after overcoming their obstacles and everyone is all the happier for it. I walked out of there upbeat and happy. Kind of titillated and feeling good. Do you see a pattern developing here yet?

So I go to see Funny Girl and here’s another play that I can picture Barbara Streisand singing, “People who need people are the luckiest people I know”.  Which really reminds me of my friends in college singing this all the time. People always ask me how I got into the art business and I tell them that my Mother is an artist and my Father is a businessman and so I obviously became the art businessman. When I was in college I hung out with this artist couple that totally prepped me for dealing with artists in my business. Fun. Cool. Interesting. Knowledgeable. But certainly more than a little crazy. Hi Fred. Thank you. I wouldn’t be here doing any of this if it weren’t for you.

Back to Funny Girl. It’s a great story really. Frumpy girl has a dream and tries really hard to overcome her obstacles and she does it.  Then a businessman who’s all flash wows her. Fanny meets him backstage after one of her performances and he has two dolled up ladies on his arm. She asks him, “Are they yours”? He responds, “I’m watching them for a friend”.
There were lots of great laughs and plenty of irony in Funny Girl. The costumes were great. At one point Fanny is performing in Zigfields Follies and the director tells Zigfield that Fannies headdress is too high for the arch. Zigfeld who is off stage in a Wizard of Oz like style where you can’t see him but his voice comes from above and he replies, “Raise the arch”. The director says it would be easier to lower the headdress. Zigfeld replies saying that wouldn’t be nearly as fabulous. Which almost sounds like a discussion I just had with the Director of my TV show, Chit Chat with David Leonardis & Sarah Cooley. Let me just say Zigfeld got his way and I am going to get my way as well! Or as they say, “Heads will roll”!

Anyway I really enjoyed Funny Girl but don’t you know at the end there’s a twist and Fanny’s husband tries too hard cause he wanted to impress his wife and he winds up in jail.  As a result when he gets out they divorce. But like in Cabaret the show still must go on. So Fanny answers her curtain call and there we are left feeling entertained but kind of sad. You feel like you got your monies worth for sure but what the producers are doing is playing on your emotions and your senses.

So let’s recap. Pump Boys and Dinettes was up beat. Cabaret ended up depressing. Thoroughly Modern Milly was up beat. Funny girl winds up on a sad note. So you can see the producers have got the Theater patrons hooked. It’s like a drug. I need to go back and get my fix when the next performance comes out. Although since I know the pattern this next time I just know I’ll be entertained and get an upbeat message. We shall see and I will certainly let you all know how that turns out next time.

All right. Lot’s of psychology and entertainment there. Now let’s go on to some just plain good food at several great restaurants.

Recently I’ve been to David Burke’s Primehouse at the James Hotel. www.davidburke.com and to Gene and Georgetti’s. www.geneandgeorgetti.com

These are two fantastic restaurants and the food is over the top good.
While the atmospheres couldn’t be any more different at either place you are so going to have a great steak and or whatever else you order will be awesome!

Well I have opening receptions on Friday the 12th and Saturday the 20th at the DLG. www.dlg-gallery.com So come on out and buy some art! It’s guaranteed to make you a better more well rounded person and it looks great in your house too!

That’s it for this weeks David Leonardis Report and I’ll see you next time.

David Leonardis Report 2010 #1

HI Folks.

The first David Leonardis Report of 2010

I just saw the movie, “Nine”.

I had only seen a short clip of it before I went but I knew Daniel Day Lewis was in it and almost every movie he is in he seems to get nominated for or actually receives the Oscar.

Several years ago he was the highlight of, “Gangs of New York” as Bill The Butcher.

Last year when he was the star of, “There Will Be Blood” he just hit every note in a great portrayal of a despicable character.

In, “Nine” DDL is an Italian Director that seems to destroy every relationship he has. He was heralded as one of the greatest filmmakers of his time and everyone loved his early movies and then he had a few flops in a row. Then he has writers block and has to cancel a movie that was in pre-production.

I'll just say right here and now as I watched this movie I felt like it was autobiographical. I'm Italian. I've had people tell me for years how inspired they are by me. I've been dating the same girl for years and by that I mean the series of women I've been dating were all different but similar. I of course Love my Italian Mother and as Sophia Loren told DDL, "I can't help you. You'll have to choose your own path", my own Mother told me the same exact thing when I wanted some advice on a bad relationship and I was forced to overcome my obstacle on my own thus making me a better person for it.

Back to, “Nine”. DDL's character is named Guido and the whole time I was watching it I kept on thinking of one of the co-owners of Club Lago, Guido Nardini. From what I know about Guido Nardini he's nothing like the character DDL plays. Again this was my autobiographical experience. I have a Marc Hauser photo of Sophia Lauren and I was acting as an Agent and Producer for filmmaker Abel Ferrara in 2002 and 2003. I was just watching some you tube clips of Abel in Italy and Cannes at a director’s conference and it was the same as what they showed in the movie with DDL. What was particularly poignant about that was that I didn’t have a contract with Abel and even though I hooked Abel up with a financier for his movie Go Go Tales I was cut out without getting paid.

The movie, “Nine” to me, like my Abel Ferrara story is about learning from your mistakes and overcoming your obstacles and then getting it right the next time and hitting a home run right out of the park. I’m going to form a LLC for my production company for my TV show. I’m single now and not looking to get into a relationship until it’s the right one. DDL in the movie had writers block and it took him two years off thinking about his problems and walking just to walk until he was able (kind of funny it’s able and Abel) to write another screenplay. I felt inspired to sit down and write this right after seeing the movie. No writer’s block here. I had a pretty serious relationship end earlier in 2009 and while I dated a bit I’ve been content to be single as opposed to rushing into another bad relationship. Did I say she was a lovely girl and I’m sorry things didn’t work out?

While you might have read previously here that a “Doyenne of Society” told me that’s what you’re supposed to say, I actually do mean it. She was a lovely girl and I am sorry things didn’t work out. But as they say one door closes and another one opens. Every new beginning is some other beginnings end.

I read the Sun Times pretty regularly and I’m constantly interested in what Richard Roeper writes. In particular recently there was an article about the real Henry Hill who the movie Goodfellas is based on who was arrested for being drunk in down state Illinois after an art show he did. I read that and thought to myself, self, it would be pretty cool to do a show of his artwork and actually get to meet Henry Hill. Then I thought to myself, self, “What are you mushuganna”? Doing a show of artwork by a guy who’s wanted by the mob can’t exactly be the best idea in the world.

Well the next day after I had that thought about Henry Hill, Richard Roeper did a whole column about Henry Hill and what a putz he was. I guess what I’m saying is that I had a similar thought to what a writer I respect had and that’s a pretty good sign. At least that’s the way I look at it.

I wrote everything above this line while I was on vacation over Christmas. Today is the 20th of January. I came back and had a great show with Joe Piscopo, Bill Zehme and Marty Casey.

I’ve been reading in the Sun Times a few times since, Richard Roepers column. My previous David Leonardis Report that is up right now before this one will appear talks about my TV show coming out and how it's going to be TV GOLD! TV GOLD!

So I'm reading Richard Roepers column and he had a whole article about health care and spreading it around so everyone can be covered. I was going to footnote it because exactly what he said seemed to echo my sentiments perfectly. Then don't you know I'm reading Roepers column and he says right in their TV GOLD! TV GOLD! I thought to myself this was kind of a strange coincidence. Then it occurred to me that maybe, just maybe he reads my column too. If you take that presumption and take it a step further (I sound like my Logic teacher in college) maybe he is actually influenced ever so slightly by me. It's a possibility is all I'm saying. If it's actually the case then I'm flattered. Funny where people of all statures get their influences.

Well folks it’s one thing to shoot a TV show. Even 8 one hour shows, like I did for instance, and it’s a completely different task to get them fully edited with transitions and the intro with a theme song and then to get them on the DV tapes that the TV station needs to be able to broadcast them is another entirely different process after that. Let’s just say shooting Chit Chat with David Leonardis & Sarah Cooley has been a valuable learning experience.

I can now say I know what it takes to put all of those things together because I have officially submitted my first show to CAN TV. We need the remaining 7 shows now and then if the planets are aligned properly and God and the Cable Casting Department at CAN TV is willing then we should start airing in March.

Ok. Now that you read all that fabulous info and enjoyed my humble narrative please pick up the phone or email me right now and buy some fantastic art from me at my 50% OFF SALE at my David Leonardis Gallery.

David Leonardis Report #12

This David Leonardis Report originally ran on www.diningchicago.com
This was May and I had just started getting on pace to break my single season Cubs Home Game Attendance Record.

Enjoy.

I promised the Art Chicago lady I would give her a review of the show and I was sure it would be a good one.

I loved the diversity of the art. I like a trim, fit, lean show with more good art then a big huge show with too much distracting art.

Not really enough Pop Art for my tastes. Last year or the year before the place was packed with Tom Wesselman pieces who had just died..

Tom Wesselman was a Warhol contemporary who really thrived in the 70's and really all the way until his death like I said a couple of years ago.

I've had several Tom Wesselman prints over the years. I just love his work.

Really sexy and very pop with a humanist touch. He loves to create a scene.

An art teacher once told me that movement in art is always a plus.

Which makes sense to me because I'm not really a big fan of still life's.

Of course it depends on the still life. But as a rule I''m going to go with, that still life's are boring.

I've acquired several pieces locally. I wound up selling them both. Well don't you know the next year or so after I sold one, Tom dies. It turns out that the piece I sold is now worth $25,000.

About 10 times what I sold mine for. The thing is that I made money on the deal. So I really don't have anything to complain about. But I probably should have held on to that one.

Being in the Art Business is a funny thing.

There are all sorts of different types of art dealers.

Art is very subjective after all.

One mans trash is another mans treasure.

Some people like your art and some don't.

Some people like you and some don't.

Some people buy from you and some don't.

Some of the same people buy from you as do they your competitors.

Some of your competitors are cautious allies and some are not.

I’m at 5 Cubs home games so far this season. 29 more to go to break my single season Cubs home game attendance record. Sschgar. I caught two of the games against the Padres. The Cubs won both games. The second game was rained out at the end of the 8th inning.
The grounds crew set the record for bringing out the tarp and putting it away the fastest ever. It was pretty funny. They say a day at Wrigley is like a vacation and I agree for sure.
There’s something about being there that really relaxes me. Whatever else I’ve got going on seems to be put nicely on hold while I’m there. Kind of like any day on the road beats a day in the office.
Well I’m on my way to Georgia tomorrow to work on my Howard Finster Vision House Museum. I’m driving my new used car that I got recently and I sure hope it works out. Nothing quite like testing a car out on a 644 mile one way trip over several mountains. I’m sure it’ll be fine. I’ve got track heads for my gallery rooms down there and another 25 pieces of art I’m donating to my own Museum. It seems like the right thing to do. When you build a Museum you need to fill it with art. There’s no book on building a Museum and a collection to go with it but if there was I’m sure it would say once you build the Museum you also have to fill it with art. I guess I’ll have to put writing the book, How to open a Museum for Dummies, on my list of things to do.
I’ve actually got some exciting news happening with the Howard Finster Vision House Museum but I can’t quite tell it yet. Stay tuned.

I’m super happy to report that I successfully sold my River North Gallery.
I’ve had my Wicker Park Gallery for 17years now and I’ve always thought of myself as a Wicker Park Gallery owner. To me it says that I’m a little more hip and also down to earth.
I wish Jennifer Norback all the best with her new gallery she’s opening in my old space.
I really developed it well and I know she’s going to maximize all of the benefits of the space.

In my Wicker Park Gallery, actually it’s my only Gallery in the State of Illinois, now Georgia is another story, at the DLG we recently re-hung the gallery.

We currently have an exhibit up of 200 works of art. If that's not enough

art for you we have half a dozen books containing photos of another 800

pieces of art for you to choose from.

Just pick out the art you like and I'll go in the back and find the art in

our Art Library. Now doesn't that sound like a winner.

I've been saying for some time and over and over again, that it is my firm

belief that, art collectors are better, more well rounded people.

Also that the children of art collectors grow up to be better, more well

rounded people.

You might also have heard me say the the great artists, collect and of

course that the great collectors rotate their collections.

Not enough room for all of your art, you say? Well then, build an art

rack.

What a great problem that would be to have, I can hear you thinking.

Now this is your golden opportunity. Since our move from our

River North Gallery space. We are a little over flowing with art at the

moment.

Being of course a great collector. I know that I need yet another art rack.

Well, I'm working on it but until then I'm having my most successful sale

ever.

The DLG Buy One Get One Free Sale.

You heard me. Buy one piece of art and get another piece free.

Get it while it lasts. Now that we're a trimmed down and fitter business I

won't be offering sales like this very often.

Less as they say is more. I of course am more of a fan of, more is more.

That's why I own like 1000 pieces of art. Not including my art publishing

archives of Howard Finster prints.

As always feel free to take advantage of our master card, visa acceptance

options.

As well the DLG Payment Plan works very well in tandem.

Pay 25% down and make payments over the next 4 months. No extra charge.

Win. Win.

If you're out of town give a call at 312.863.9045 or email me at david@dlg-gallery.com and I'll ship your art right to

you. No tax for out of state purchases.

That’s it for this time ladies and gentleman.

Thank you very much for your interest.

And on and on it goes.
